  • Overview

    We are searching for a Director of Laboratory Services to provide hands-on leadership to a team of 9 across two multidisciplinary laboratories and expand the existing capabilities by launching a 3rd lab in the next 12-18 months.


    Based in the Central Valley and reporting to the VP Agricultural Services, this is a high-visibility position and is responsible for personnel management, quality management, compliance, safety, continuous improvement, and business development.

    Job Function

    • A key function of the Director will be working with the internal capital projects team on the development of a third lab to be focused on plant micropropagation.
    • Collaborate with Lab Managers, and with both internal and external customers to determine operational and business needs and provide effective solutions
    • Direct major objectives within the activities of the laboratory, providing high level support in collaboration across divisions and management teams
    • Provide strategic plans and ideas to improve efficiency of laboratory operations, including incorporation of new technologies or processes
    • Lead and drive continuous improvement with an emphasis on improving and maintaining high quality standards
    • Provide technical expertise between laboratories and other business units, external customers and corporate management. Develop and maintain an environment that encourages cooperation in support of corporate objectives.
    • Develop and monitor lab budgets and operational goals
    • Provide managerial and technical guidance to laboratory management and personnel. Ensure activities are compliant with regulations.
    • Develop team and individual technical knowledge in areas such as emerging technologies, scientific and industry trends, and regulatory requirements.
    • Lead efforts to expand laboratory services to outside parties while maintaining high quality standards for internal testing needs 

    Job Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, BioChemistry, Chemistry or related field from accredited college or university, and minimum of five (5) years of progressive Laboratory Services experience. Master's degree or PhD preferred.
    • Extensive knowledge of laboratory operations within an agricultural company. Lab startup experience preferred.
    • Strong business acumen with the ability to make timely decisions based on in-depth knowledge and experience with finance, accounting, marketing and sales, business development, and operations.
    • Demonstrated leadership, strategic planning, budgeting, project management, research team development within a large and diverse organization.
    • Experience building high-performance R&D teams focused on collaboration and commercial success.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with different levels of management, lab team, and internal and external customers
    • Ability to prioritize, adapt and multi-task in a fast paced, changing environment
