  • Overview

    We are searching for a Head of R&D to lead the commercial transformation of an R&D team focused on developing high-value branded food ingredients, nutritional oils, and products that improve human health and farm productivity.

     

    Based in Northern California and reporting to the CEO, this position will lead 20+ in the research team focused on commercial trait & seed development.

    Job Function

    • Develop a transformational commercialization strategy and lead the cultural reorientation for the R&D team.
    • Drawing from experience in plant biotechnology or breeding, manage all aspects related to trait development and characterization up to foundation seed stage. This includes nursery and all germplasm field testing with the ability to interface effectively with all parts of the organization.
    • Utilize best practices to implement a structured stage-gate process for project management of late stage development products into the market place.
    • Build robust internal processes to track project progress and ensure lab to field coordination.
    • Influence across the corporation in order to drive alignment of goals, resources, accountabilities in order to meet business objectives.
    • Effectively communicate technology to a variety of audiences including board members, investors and other external stakeholders
    • Utilize background in regulatory science and intellectual property rights to manage licensing technologies (in and out) and germplasm as necessary to execute company strategy 
    • Make good judgments and quick decisions based on in-depth knowledge and experience with finance, accounting, marketing and sales, commercialization and business development, and operations.

    Job Requirements

    • A Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Biology, Plant Genetics, Plant Breeding, Crop Seed Technologies or related agricultural crop discipline is required. 
    • Experience implementing or operating scientific project management, project prioritization and stage-gating within a market-facing science organization.
    • Experience successfully bringing a seed-based technology to commercialization. Preference for wheat, soybean, or corn.
    • Demonstrated leadership, strategic planning, budgeting, project management, research team development within a large and diverse organization.
    • Strong business acumen with the ability to make timely decisions based on in-depth knowledge and experience with finance, accounting, marketing and sales, commercialization and business development, and operations.
    • Experience with crop seed technologies and seed-based regulatory environments is highly desirable.
    • Experience building high-performance R&D teams focused on collaboration and commercial success.
    • Distinct sense of urgency with the ability to carry out multiple projects simultaneously and adapt to a dynamic work environment.
    • Six Sigma Green Belt training is a plus.
